We have recently seen an increase in unnecessary or inappropriate requests from schools asking for medical certificates, 'toilet passes', or confirmation of minor illnesses. This is not something that is required, nor is it something that is provided in general practice.
To support you, we have created a set of letter templates that you can provide directly to schools. These templates explain why a GP letter is not required and outline the national guidance that schools should follow. They are designed to reduce burden on parents/childre, avoidable bureaucracy, and help ensure that GP appointments are kept available for patients with medical needs.
If you receive a request from a school that you believe is unnecessary, please feel free to use one of these templates rather than booking an appointment.
